At present, I work at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust as the Senior Anaemia & Renal Patient Support Nurse Manager. I lead a team of nurses who manage those people who have chosen not to have renal replacement therapy. They are managed conservatively through a shared care programme between the hospital and the community. The team are involved in advanced care planning that respects patient wishes towards the end of life. Some of these people will have been diagnosed with dementia and thus planning for the future is necessary for them before they are unable to make their own decisions regarding future treatment for their kidney disease.
I have attended many lectures in the UK on advanced care planning and have co-edited a book on conservative management. I lecturer post registration students at Oxford Brookes University on end of life care for those with Chronic Kidney Disease.
