Aine Burns

Dr Burns was awarded an honours medical degree from University College Cork Ireland in 1983.  After 4 years of post-graduate training in Ireland she moved to the Royal Post-graduate Medical School Hammersmith London where she completed an MD degree in HLA genetics.  She completed her clinical nephrology training in the Royal Free Hospital Hampstead and was awarded a fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians.  In 1992 she was appointed as a consultant nephrologist and  honorary senior lecturer at RFH and UCL medical school.  In 2008 she completed a Masters in Medical Education.  She continues to work as a consultant nephrologist and director of post-graduate medical education at RFH.  Her main clinical areas of interest are improving the holistic care of elderly patients with advanced Chronic kidney disease and auto-immune renal diseases.  She has lectured and published extensively in these areas and has recently contributed to the KDIGO workshop on supportive care.  She is married to a Urologist and has 5 children 2 of who are pursuing careers in medicine.

Dr Burns will cover the growing topic of end stage kidney disease in elderly patients.  She will cover some historical aspects of dialysis and will give practical advice on how holistic care can be delivered throughout  a renal patients journey even as death approaches.
